Making Test Prep Engaging: Innovative Strategies for Fourth Grade Math
VOGELWEH, Germany — Fourth-grade students at Vogelweh Elementary School recently took part in innovative, movement-based math review activities designed to make test preparation both engaging and effective.
In preparation for the upcoming fourth-grade Math Cognitive Proficiency Assessment (CPA), the AAPS resource teacher and fourth-grade teaching team collaborated to design engaging, movement-based activities that transformed traditional test review into an interactive learning experience.
AAPS Resource Teacher DiAnna Martinez partnered with fourth-grade teachers Christina Morgan, RT Caston, Latonya Dennis and Holly Wright to create lessons focused on strengthening students’ multiplication, division, number series identification and multistep word problem skills while also promoting collaboration, critical thinking and creativity.
The team implemented two interactive review activities designed to keep students actively engaged. Leveraging the school’s 21st-century learning environment, all four classes worked through 15 multistep word problems strategically placed throughout the neighborhood hub. Students moved from station to station, collaborating with peers to solve each problem while applying problem-solving strategies in real time. The activity encouraged movement, peer interaction and perseverance, reinforcing key components of deeper learning.
The second activity added a competitive element. Students partnered up to complete a series of challenge problems, earning the opportunity to add their initials to the answer board for each correct solution. This format motivated students to work efficiently while reinforcing teamwork and strategic thinking. The growing list of initials added excitement and energy to the review process.
Both activities allowed teachers to observe student progress closely and provide targeted support to those needing additional assistance. By combining movement, collaboration and problem-solving, the team created a review experience that was both rigorous and enjoyable, demonstrating that test preparation can be dynamic and effective.
