3rd grade students enjoy Market Day at Vogelweh Elementary School in Kaiserslautern, Germany.

KAISERSLAUTERN, Germany – Market Day at Vogelweh Elementary School was the exciting end-of-unit project for the 3rd graders’ economics study -- and with 100 students participating it became one of the most memorable learning experiences of the school year.

Learning Economics by Doing Economics

Throughout the unit, students explored important economic ideas such as goods and services, producers and consumers, profit, supply, and demand. Market Day gave them the chance to put those concepts into action in a hands-on, meaningful way.

With help from their parents at home, each student created a product to sell; everything from handmade crafts to bookmarks, toys, and treats. Families helped brainstorm ideas, gather materials, and practice sales strategies, making preparation part of the fun.

In the early planning stages, students completed their business applications, outlining their business ideas and pricing. As their plans developed, they earned a business license. Students proudly displayed their licenses at their shops, adding authenticity and excitement to the experience.

Six Rotations of Real-World Decision-Making

During Market Day, students participated in six rotations of selling, giving everyone multiple opportunities to act as both producer and consumer. After three rotations, they checked their inventory and decided whether they needed to adjust their prices based on supply and demand.

Some students raised prices when their items were selling quickly, while others lowered prices to attract more buyers. These choices helped them understand how real markets work and they enjoyed every minute of it.

Nine-year-old Gabrielle R. shared, “I loved Market Day because I got to sell things I made and change my prices like a real business owner. It was so much fun, and I wish Market Day was longer!”

A Team Effort

Teachers worked hard to teach the economic concepts, organize the event, and guide students through each step.

The 3rd-grade team: Mr. Paul Mac, Ms. Kylie Seitz, Ms. Sandra Roda, and Ms. Lorie Knaeble, supported students throughout the entire process, helping them feel confident, prepared, and excited for the big day. Their planning and enthusiasm helped make the event smooth, successful, and memorable.

Dr. Pamela Wimberly, VES Principal, praised the students’ hard work and creativity, saying, “Market Day is a wonderful example of how learning comes alive when students take the lead. Our 3rd graders showed incredible teamwork, problem-solving, and imagination. We are so proud of them.”

Parents also played a huge role, supporting their children as they created their products and practiced being entrepreneurs.

A Fun and Meaningful Experience

By the end of the day, students were buzzing with excitement as they counted their earnings, talked about their strategies, and celebrated their success.

Market Day wasn’t just fun — it made economics real, memorable, and empowering for every 3rd grader. Vice Principal, Dr. Brenda Hebner added, “Events like this show how capable our students are when given the chance to shine. Their creativity and confidence were on full display, and it was inspiring to watch.”
